Germany is taking decisive steps to accelerate the expansion of onshore wind energy as part of its commitment to a sustainable and climate-friendly future. With a target of reaching 160 gigawatts (GW) of installed capacity by 2035, the country has developed a comprehensive strategy, known as the Windenergie-an-Land-Strategie (“Onshore Wind Strategy”), to overcome challenges and promote the growth of onshore wind energy.

Germany recognizes the importance of transitioning to renewable energy sources to combat climate change. And onshore wind power is one of the key components of this transition as it offers a reliable and cost-effective solution towards this goal. The current onshore wind capacity in Germany is approximately 58 GW and the new strategy sets ambitious targets of 115 GW by 2030 and 160 GW by 2035.

The Onshore Wind Strategy focuses on key areas to drive the expansion of onshore wind energy:

  • Policy framework: The strategy aims to improve the effectiveness of the current policies promoting wind energy growth.
  • Economic framework: The German government aims to support market-driven expansion by improving conditions for direct green power purchase agreements (PPAs).
  • Repowering: Upgrading old turbines with modern and efficient ones is prioritized, and efforts are made to simplify the process.
  • Free additional land: provide more land for wind energy projects, particularly to meet the needs of commercial and industrial sectors.
  • Accelerating Authorization Processes: Renewable energy projects receive priority in the approval process, and steps are being taken to simplify and speed up authorization procedures.
  • Strengthening Social Acceptance: Involving local communities and stakeholders in wind energy projects to foster acceptance and support.
  • Ensuring Skilled Workforce: Measures to address skill gaps and ensure a qualified workforce for the energy transition.
  • Technological Development: Funding research to improve wind energy technology, cost efficiency, and competitiveness.
  • Grid Expansion: Ensuring a well-planned grid expansion to accommodate the increasing capacity of wind energy and optimize system integration.

Germany’s Onshore wind strategy provides a roadmap for the country’s ambitious goals in onshore wind energy. The strategy focuses on simplifying processes, gaining social acceptance, promoting innovation, and fostering investment. By implementing this plan, Germany aims to create a sustainable and climate-friendly energy sector for a better future.
