The Ambitious Vision Behind the Ellinikon Smart City Project in Athens

ellinikon

The Ellinikon project is one of Europe’s largest urban regeneration endeavors, located on the Athenian Riviera. This multi-dimensional development combines location, scale, and ambition to set new standards for sustainable coastal living. Adjacent to central Athens, the Piraeus Port, and the International Airport, The Ellinikon development area covers three times more land than Monaco and aims to become the leading center of economic, environmental, and innovative development within the next 15 to 25 years.

The project, set to reuse the space of the old Athen Ellinikon airport, will provide a €8 billion investment in the Greek economy and create over 75,000 new jobs. It follows a new model of urban development that prioritizes large open areas, essential services such as education and healthcare, and smart infrastructure with a focus on sustainability.

The Experience Park is one of the key highlights of The Ellinikon, a 280-acre park connecting people with nature. The park includes 500 trees, 55,000 plants, 4 plazas, and an Experience Centre showcasing the project’s history, present, and future through an interactive exhibition.

Smart irrigation, water management, lighting, connectivity, and building systems are integral to the Ellinikon project, as well as smart mobility, energy management, and waste management systems. The project prioritizes reducing traffic congestion and environmental pollutants, with easy access by public transport, bicycle, or foot.

Construction at The Ellinikon is planned to be carried out with minimal disruption to the surrounding areas and with effective management and disposal of materials. Most of the phase 1 developments are expected to be completed and open to the public by the end of 2025. The Ellinikon project has the potential to set a new standard for sustainable urban development and if successful, is poised to become a global model for large-scale green projects.
