Siemens Gamesa Selected to Supply Denmark’s Largest Offshore Wind Energy Farm

Siemens Gamesa, one of the leading wind turbine manufacturer, has been selected as the preferred supplier for the 1,000-MW Thor offshore wind power plant in Denmark, the country’s largest offshore wind power project to date. The project, which is being developed by RWE, will see 72 units of Siemens Gamesa’s flagship SG 14-236 DD offshore wind turbines installed starting in 2026.

The Thor project, located in the Danish North Sea approximately 22 kilometers from Thorsminde on the west coast of Jutland, will generate enough green electricity to power more than one million Danish households. The turbine installation works will be carried out from the Port of Esbjerg, and both Siemens Gamesa and RWE plan to utilize the local Danish workforce during the construction and commissioning of the project.

Siemens Gamesa’s SG 14-236 offshore wind turbine

The SG 14-236 DD is Siemens Gamesa’s flagship offshore wind turbine, featuring a capacity of almost 15 MW and a 236-meter diameter rotor with a swept area of 43,500 square meters. This allows the turbine to provide an increase of more than 30% in Annual Energy Production (AEP) compared to its predecessor. The turbine features Siemens Gamesa’s patented IntegralBlades, each measuring 115 meters in length.

For the operation and maintenance of Thor, RWE will set up a service base at the port of Thorsminde, creating up to 60 permanent jobs. The new service station is expected to be fully operational from 2026 onward.

With a planned capacity of 1,000 MW, Thor will significantly increase Denmark’s share of electricity produced from renewable energy sources and help to reduce the country’s carbon emissions, in line with the European Green Deal. This project is a significant milestone in the growth of offshore wind power in Denmark, and highlights the increasing importance of renewable energy in the global energy mix and the role of Siemens Gamesa in this industry.
